Background and Beginnings

First blog post! So welcome and thanks for looking. I'm a post doc living and working in a university town in the UK. I work in science and spend a lot of my working life synthesising and characterising obscure chemicals and muttering about glove boxes.

This blog is predominately about my life outside of work as I learn to bend and suspend myself into improbable looking shapes via Bikram yoga and aerial circus training.

I started doing aerials whilst living in the US. Lessons were temporarily put on hold when I moved back to the UK in October as the nearest circus school involved a 3 hour trek into London. However some new silks and lyra/ hoop classes have just started where I live so am super excited to be up in the air again :)

I have been practising yoga in various forms for over 10 years. In January I singed up for an introductory trial at my local Bikram studio mainly to escape to cold and improve my flexibility for circus. However quickly found it very addictive in its own right. I was amazed how quickly my body started to transform with the regular practise. Several old running injuries improved dramatically. Both elbows now have the same degree of flexibility for the 1st time since a bad sprain 15 years ago! I also effortless dropped the stubborn 3kg that I gained in the US :). I'm now 1.5 months in to my 3 month unlimited pass and practise 4-5 times a week.

Of course the scientist in me is really fascinated by biological reasons behind all the glowing Bikram testimonials. This will be the subject of many other posts but suffice to say for now that there is SO much scope for some really interesting studies. The science of Bikram is a hugely understudied area. I'm also really interested in how circus and Bikram help me improve in each other.

Both Bikram and Circus bring a huge amount to my life and I am excited to explore both worlds as deeply as I can. I have a hunch it could be life altering.
